The park with the castle in Šylerzovice

In the 16th century, the first Renaissance castle was built in Šillerzovice (Šilheřovice in Czech). The castle belonged to the Lords of Vrbno and was mentioned in a document from 1609. In 1787 the castle passed to Johann Friedrich von Eichendorff. At the beginning of the 19th century, Eichendorff built a new palace in a three-winged style with a chapel, moving here from Tworkow. The chateau was surrounded by a park, in which ornamental and fruit trees grew in abundance.

There were several greenhouses in the garden, including one that even grew pineapples. Joseph von Eichendorff, poet and brother of the owner, described in his correspondence romantic walks with his uncle in the park, listening to songs sung by his cousin on the guitar. In 1844, the palace was bought by the Jewish banker from Vienna, Baron Salomon Mayer von Rothschild, and his family made the palace a social venue.

History of the Chateau. There is a chateau in the vicinity of Šylerzovice, the construction of which began as early as the 16th century. In the 18th century, the building passed into the hands of Johann Friedrich von Eichendorff, who decided to build a new palace with a park. In 1844, the estate was acquired by the Jewish banker Salomon Mayer von Rothschild, who decided to carry out a redevelopment in neo-Baroque style. The park included a hunting lodge, restaurant, orangery, greenhouses, caretaker's cottages, dairy and stables. After the Second World War, the park was reduced to 86 hectares, and in 1970 the first golf course in the People's Democracy was built on the site. The park contains numerous specimens of dendroflora, including a red-leaved beech with a trunk circumference of 350 cm, Wejutka pines, junipers, oaks and beeches with circumferences of 360 cm to 380 cm.

There are not many exotic tree species in the chateau park in Šlerzovice, but the natural value of this place lies in other aspects. The park covers an area of 98 hectares and is one of the largest in the Czech Republic. Here you will find century-old trees such as English oak, small-leaved linden, sycamore and beech. Prominent among them is the bog cypress, Taxodium distichum (L.) Rich., whose natural habitat is the floodplain along the Atlantic coast in North America. This tree can reach up to 50 metres in height. Because of the swamps in which it grows, the swamp cypress can develop special roots called pneumatophores, which it uses for respiration. As with the larch, the cypress's needles fall in winter and the cones are spherical in shape and 2-3 cm in size. Large specimens of the cypress are distinguished by their light green needles, which are soft to the touch and very decorative. The park in Širlerzovice is certainly one of the most beautiful English-style parks in Europe, combining the described architectural elements with a naturalistic composition.

Rare species of exotic trees can be found in the Szylerzowice chateau park. Prominent among them are theejmutka pine and the Canadian Christmas tree, characterised by evergreen needles and crowns of picturesque shape. The park is also home to the grand fir, a species found naturally only in the Cascade Mountains and Sierra Nevada in the USA. Among the deciduous exotic trees to be encountered in the park are the ginkgo biloba, the maple-leaf plane tree and the American tulip tree. There are some impressive trees in the park, including an American tulip tree by the south wing of the castle, a ginkgo biloba by the north wing of the castle, and an avenue of maple-leaf plane trees leading up to the Huntsman's Palace.

In the Šylerzovice chateau park there is a unique specimen of the common beech called Fagus sylvatica L. f. 'Laciniata'. This is a variety whose leaves are characterised by the cut edges of the leaf blade, which distinguishes it from the typical beech. Although this variety is unusual, the common beech is a species native to the park. In addition to this, the park is also home to a variety of Fagus sylvatica L. f. 'Purpurea', which is distinguished by its purple leaves. Next to the sagebrush beech there is a pond framed by Caucasian firs with dark-coloured crowns, Abies nordmanniana (Steven) Spach, which are native to the western Caucasus and north-eastern Anatolia.

The chateau park in Šlerzovice is included in the register of cultural monuments of the Czech Republic and is protected by law as part of the Natura 2000 network. This is due to the presence in the park of the rare oak hermaphrodite beetle, Osmoderma eremita, whose population is under threat due to its specific lifestyle. This insect only inhabits old trees with large hollows, and the adults rarely leave their hollow. They are killed by the felling of old trees, which leads to the disappearance of the pachyderm population. A distinctive tell-tale sign is the presence of a musky smell and characteristic droppings in the hollow's litter.
