The castle ruins in Tworków

The restored and protected ruins of the 16th century Reiswitz castle offer visitors a journey back to the time of the noble families of Eichendorff and Reiswitz. In the western wing of the ruins, there is a reconstructed palace tower, on top of which the At the top of the tower, a 21-metre-high observation deck is open to the public. Tworków Castle, built in the 16th century, has not only historical value, but also scientific and artistic value. It was probably built on the remains of a medieval fortified castle. In 1871-1872, the then owners, the von Saurma-Jeltsch family, had it extensively rebuilt.

The task was entrusted to Karl Heidenreich, a well-known architect whose credits included the design of the palace in Pławniowice. Heidenreich was also a pupil of Karl Lüdecki, a well-known Berlin architect who designed many residences in Silesia.

In the nearby church you can see a valuable display of richly decorated sarcophagi of the von Reiswitz family, one of the owners of the castle. It is also worth noting the preserved clothes, as this collection is the largest collection of children's sarcophagi in Poland with rich polychromy.

The collection is located in the nearby church.

The building is located on a slope in the north-eastern part of the village and is partly surrounded by a moat, the walls of which can be seen at the southern elevation. On the northern side it is bordered by the channel of the river Psina. Nearby are the remains of a landscape park established in the 1880s, which consists of, among others, lime trees, elm trees and beech trees overgrown with common ivy. In its eastern part there are brick cellars dating back to the 16th/17th century. The property is enclosed by a mesh fence and has a metal fence.

Between 1872 and 1874, the building underwent a major reconstruction designed by Karl Heidenreich and acquired a Neo-Renaissance style, which was built on a Renaissance framework. The castle has a C-shaped ground plan open to the south and consists of three wings surrounding an open arcaded courtyard. The west wing has a quadrangular clock tower and a second tower of cylindrical form is located in the south-west corner. The layout of the rooms is irregular, mainly single-arched. The building is made of brick with an admixture of stone and originally plastered. It is characterised by an irregular axis layout with the exception of the arcaded courtyard. The main decorative elements of the façade are fragments of cornices, rustication, decorative window frames and gables. There are two small niches in the front elevation and the east wing is enclosed by a small triangular pediment, inside of which were stone figures now kept in the local church. The building has been a permanent ruin since 1931 and has no original furnishings or interior decoration.

The ancient castle of Tworków, first mentioned in 1525, has undergone many changes over the centuries. At the beginning of the 16th century, Jan Sup von Fullstein became the owner of the castle, and in 1567 it was rebuilt by Kasper Wyskota of Wodnik. In the following years, the castle changed owners, including Hynek Petrovich Charwat of Wieczy, Wilhelm and Ewa Boreck, and the von Saurma-Jeltsch family, who carried out a major reconstruction of the building in the Neo-Renaissance style in 1872-1874. Unfortunately, the castle was burnt down by fire in 1931 and was destroyed again during the warfare in 1945. It has remained in ruins ever since and was taken over by the municipality of Krzyżanowice in 2003. Although the original furnishings and interior decoration have not been preserved, Tworków Castle still attracts tourists with its history and valuable monuments, such as the Renaissance foundation and the round tower, among others.
